Youth Recreational Basketball (Grades 1st-6th)

YMCA Youth Recreational Basketball is for kids (grades 1st - 6th) of any skill level. This program will teach kids the fundamental skills and rules of basketball, suitable for their age group. Practice is for an hour two days a week, (in most cases, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday in Los Alamos or White Rock.)

Games:
Games will mainly be played on Fridays from 4:00-9:00pm and some games will be played on Saturdays 9:00 AM- 6:00 PM. 

Participants will get team jerseys to keep!

Season: September 30th, 2024 - December 21st, 2024
Fees: $140/ $110 for Y Members

All program participants must have a parent/guardian sign a Child Liability Waiver and a COVID-19 waiver before participating.

Program payment policy: payment upon registration is required, no refunds, credits will be given on a case to case basis.

These programs rely on volunteers. Volunteer coaches of any experience level are needed and greatly appreciated.

COMING January, 2025: WILDCAT BASKETBALL! (5th and 6th grade Co-Ed)

Wildcat Basketball: The YMCA presents, for the first time ever, a competitive basketball league where the 5th and 6th grade boys and girls from all 5 elementary schools in Los Alamos get to compete for the title of being the fiercest wildcat! It will be a fun 6 week competition between the Aspen Tigers, the Barranca Bobcats, the Chamisa Cheetahs, the Mountain Lions and the Pinon Panthers! The #1 Wildcat team will "take home" the traveling trophy and get to display it at their school until the next champion is determined the following year! Teams will be expected to represent their schools proudly and display great sportsmanship on and off the court.

Register:  November 22nd, 2024 - January 5th, 2025
Tryouts: January 10th, 11th or 12th (TBD)--Must register for tryouts by January 5th, 2025!
***Tryouts will be held to form 1 co-ed team per elementary school
Season: January 20th - February 28th, 2025
Fees: $100 / $85 Y Members (Will be refunded 100% if your child does not make a team)
Practices: 6:00-7:30pm 2x per week (practices will most likely be held at the elementary school that the child attends but no guarantee with school construction projects. No matter where practice is held, your child will represent the school that they attend)
Games: Friday evenings and/or Saturdays

Youth Basketball Open Gym 2024 (K-12th grades)

Open Gym being offered during '24-'25 school year is TBD. If interested, please email lzollinger@laymca.org to be put on an "interest list"

Ages 12 and Under: Wednesdays 12:30-2:00pm
Ages 13-18: June and July on Tuesday & Thursday 12:30-1:30pm

$15/month (12 and Under)/Free for Y Members
$30/month (13-18)/Free for Y Members

 

Little Youth Basketball (Ages 4-5 & 6-7)

Dates for 2025 TBD

***Currently only LA practice locations are available for 4-5 year olds. Chamisa is available as a WR location for the 6-7 year old age group. No WR locations have hoops that go low enough for the 4-5 year old age group.

This 6 week introductory basketball program for girls and boys will focus on developing coordination and learning the basic skills & rules of basketball. Mini-sized balls will be used as well as 6ft-8ft baskets.  Practice/Games will be 2x per week in Los Alamos and White Rock (sometimes not available). Participants will get team jerseys to keep. NEW this year: participants will also get a basketball to keep!

The YMCA will monitor public health orders and adapt the program to any changes in restrictions and guidelines.

Season: May 20th - June 28th, 2024
Season Fee: $80 / $60 for Y Members
Coach Discount: $30 discount for coaches! Limit 1 head coach and 1 assistant coach per team.
***AGE RESTRICTION RULE: Child must be a minimum of 4 years old by start date of season OR turn 4 years old during the season to be able to register for LYB. As for the 6-7 year old division, your child must be no older than 7 years old by the start of the season to be eligible. If child turns 8 years old within the season, this is fine. However, child cannot be 8+ years old before the start of the season.

Please go through the fully digitized SPORTS volunteer signup process according to the steps below to become a volunteer coach:

First read/review the following:

THEN complete the following 3 forms:

1. Volunteer Application Form

2. Background Check Form

3. Liability Waiver and Covid Waiver

FINALLY, wait for an email from our staff giving you an official "green light" to volunteer

Manual signup forms, has to be printed, signed and handed into front desk at the YMCA.
